Kubrick, ‘Hit the deck, you guys! It’s 20th Century Fox!’

At the 1969 Oscar ceremonies, during which 2001 inexplicably failed to sweep the board, the greatest insult of all was when 20th Century Fox’s Planet of the Apes won an award for its mass-produced gorilla masks. This was a nasty shock, bearing in mind the effectiveness of Stuart Freeborn and his son Graham’s apemen costumes.  The Academy’s decision was a real injustice. After the awards ceremony, Arthur Clarke went round muttering his dissatisfaction as loudly as he could. ‘What did they think we used - real apes?’

According to Dan Richter (the man who played the Moonwatcher) ‘There was a lot of paranoia while we were preparing The Dawn of Man. We didn’t know for sure, but we thought we were being watched by the Planet of the Apes people. Parts of our costumes did go missing and Stanley went ballistic. Once a helicopter flew over us while we were in the open, and we all dived for cover.’ Victor Davis (the man who played a ‘mother’ ape clutching a real chimpanzee) remembers Kubrick hearing the chopper and running out of his office, shouting to the troupe, ‘Hit the deck, you guys! It’s 20th Century Fox!’
